11:00-12:00 Blockwise-Adaptive Modes of Operation: A Tutorial
Antoine Joux
In this talk, we present the blockwise security paradigm for modes of
operation. Blockwise security was introduced to reflect common
practice, where messages are not encrypted as a whole under a mode of
operation for a block cipher but instead processed block by block in a
incremental manner. In this new setting, extra precaution are needed
to guarantee the security of encryption.
Moreover, we show that, even with these extra precautions, attacks in
the blockwise security model might become easier than attacks in the
usual messagewise security model.
